November 24, 2020

As we are moving into the winter season and more activities are forced indoors, I trust that we are all aware of how things currently stand in regards to COVID-19. I want to first express my gratitude for the way each one of you has been willing to abide by the guidelines put in place by our leadership team. What could easily have been turned into something divisive was not because of your desire to put community, fellowship and the well being of others above personal preference. We are thankful that since we resumed meeting for worship in-person in June, we have not had any large outbreaks move through our congregation.

However, that does not mean that we have gone unaffected by COVID during that time. Some of us have personally battled or are currently fighting the illness. All of us have been impacted by the disruption it has caused to our jobs, school schedules and daily routines. As we watch the way things are unfolding in our country, state and county, and as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, I believe it would be wise for us to revisit the precautions we have put in place at Derby Friends to help us best care for one another.

We understand these practices are not infallible, but rather a framework for us to provide gathering spaces that are safe for all who attend. Please take a moment to review our guidelines so that you can be sure you are honoring them to the best of your ability.

  • Masks continue to be required by Sedgwick County and we ask that you abide by that same requirement when you are in the building unless social distancing of 6 feet or more is possible.

  • We will continue to keep the seats in the sanctuary spaced out in a way that provides for social distancing.

  • Please refrain from physical contact with anyone outside of your family group.

For the time being, we will continue to meet for worship in person and online, but it is important that we continue to adhere to the precautions above. Our Elders leadership team will be meeting Monday, November 30 and a portion of our time will be spent discussing and praying together about any actions we will take going forward. I ask that you would join with us in praying for the Spirit to give our leaders continued wisdom and discernment in how to faithfully lead the people he has placed under our care.

Grace and peace to each of you,

Josiah
